ENG: English for the Next Generation

ENG was established in Japan to develop and test innovative approaches for improving English conversation skills in elementary and junior high school classrooms.

Running since 2004

Theory & purpose

Practice English like a sport

Nobody learns to play soccer or the piano by only studying rules. Language works the same way: speaking and listening improve through repeated, enjoyable practice with real people.

ENG supplements, not replaces, traditional English classes. Our coaches provide small-group and one-to-one practice that builds confidence and motivation, so students get far more out of every regular lesson.

Born in Nagasaki

ENG began in 2004 at Seido Girls School in Nagasaki to develop the English conversation skills of elementary and junior high students, with support from local and national Boards of Education.

Public school pilot

In the 2019-20 school year, a pilot ENG curriculum ran at five public elementary schools and one public junior high school with the support of the Nagasaki Board of Education.

Sharing what works

ENG lesson plans have been used at English camps around Japan, including American Village at Global Arena in Fukuoka.

How ENG works

A toolbox of practice methods

Every ENG activity is designed to get students speaking and listening as much as possible in the time available.

  • 16-vowel pronunciation system

A simple visual system that helps Japanese speakers hear and produce the English vowel sounds that do not exist in Japanese.

  • Listening training games

Game-show style listening activities such as Jeopardy and Millionaire that train students to catch sounds, rhythms, and meaning at natural speed.

  • Finite Fluency™

A simple yet game-changing, step-by-step approach to coaching young students toward natural, fun, and confidence-building English conversations with ALTs.

  • Word Puzzle & Word Building

Hands-on card and puzzle activities where students physically build English sentences, word order, and questions.

  • English Rangers internships

International university interns receive TEFL-style training and coach small groups and one-to-one practice in schools.

  • Classroom Blitz

Short, high-energy visits that flood a whole class with English interaction and leave students wanting more.

  • SWR reading & speed drills

Structured reading practice plus timed drills that push words out of the head and into automatic, natural speech.

  • Hybrid online lessons

Online one-to-one and small-group sessions that keep practice going between school visits and camps.

  • English camps

Immersion camps in and around Japan where students live the language for days at a time. ENG lesson plans have been used at camps including American Village at Global Arena in Fukuoka.

English Rangers

Interns who become teachers

English Rangers are international university interns who receive TEFL training and real classroom experience in Japanese schools. Some earn university credit for their internship.

Many former Rangers have gone on to become English teachers in Japan, bringing their energy and experience into their own classrooms.
